Celebrating a Decade of Comprehensive Partnership and 28 Years of Diplomatic Relations between the United States and Vietnam

This year marks a significant milestone as we commemorate the tenth anniversary of our comprehensive partnership with Vietnam, alongside celebrating over two decades since diplomatic relations were established. The journey that has led us to this point is one of cooperation, shared values, and mutual growth in various sectors.

Economic Collaboration

The economic ties between the United States and Vietnam have grown stronger over these years, driven by a mutual commitment to free trade and investment. This partnership has been characterized by robust bilateral trade, investments that benefit both economies, and initiatives med at enhancing competitiveness and innovation. Both nations are eager to explore new avenues for collaboration in sectors such as technology, renewable energy, and digital economy.

Healthcare Partnership

The cornerstone of our cooperation in healthcare is the strong foundation ld over two decades by the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention CDC in Vietnam. This partnership has been pivotal in building robust health systems capable of addressing both current challenges and future threats such as pandemics.

COVID-19 Response Collaboration

In 2020, when the global pandemic hit, Vietnam was among the first countries to assist the United States with personal protective equipment PPE during its early peak. Simultaneously, the United States provided substantial support through the COVAX facility and technical assistance to strengthen Vietnam’s response to COVID-19, highlighting our shared commitment to global health security.

Education and Youth Development

Education is a key pillar of our relationship with Vietnam, reflecting our investment in future generations. Over 30,000 Vietnamese students have studied in the United States, making them one of the largest groups of international students here. The Fulbright program has been particularly impactful over its three decades, fostering scholarly exchange between American and Vietnamese scholars.

Cultural Engagement

The establishment of the Fulbright University of Vietnam in Ho Chi Minh City marks another significant milestone in cultural engagement. Graduating its first class this June underscores our commitment to education and knowledge sharing across continents. The Peace Corps has also recently made its debut in Vietnam, contributing to English education initiatives with volunteers.

Regional Stability and Cooperation

In support of regional stability, the United States continues to invest significantly in the Mekong sub-region through programs like the Mekong-U.S. Partnership MUSP. Since 2009, U.S. assistance has surpassed $5.8 billion towards economic connectivity, natural resource management, and non-traditional security challenges.

Innovative Collaborations

Our partnerships ext beyond traditional sectors into innovative collaborations that leverage technology and industry partnerships. Universities in Vietnam are forging alliances with leading American institutions like Harvard University, Arizona State University, Indiana University, and private sector giants such as Microsoft, Google, Oracle, Intel, Amazon, among others. These collaborations enhance research capabilities, workforce development, and the integration of technology into education.

As we reflect on this decade, it's clear that our partnership with Vietnam has flourished through shared efforts in economic growth, healthcare advancement, educational exchange, and regional stability. The future promises even more opportunities for collaboration as both nations continue to prioritize innovation, sustnability, and global cooperation.

This joint journey underscores the uring strength of our diplomatic ties, rooted in mutual respect, trust, and a collective vision for a prosperous future for all involved.
