Accenture Study Reveals a Transformational Shift in Healthcare: Patients and s Join Doctors at the Forefront of Digital Health Services Revolution
The rapid adoption and use of digital technologies, including wearable devices, mobile applications, tablets, and are reshaping healthcare delivery. According to a comprehensive survey by Accenture from HIMSS18, patient demand for digital health services is fueling an innovative care model that integrates patients and s alongside medical practitioners in the healthcare delivery process.
The study found that nearly one-fifth of respondents 19 have already incorporatedbased healthcare solutions into their medical care. The majority are likely to utilizepowered clinical tools such as home-based diagnostics 66 of respondents, virtual health assistants 61, and virtual nurses that monitor patient conditions, medications, and vital signs from a distance 55.
“Healthcare consumers are increasingly accustomed to using digital technologies for controlling their healthcare needswhen, where, and how they receive services,” sd Kaveh Safavi, M.D., J.D., Accenture's global leader in health practice. “By harnessing these tools, healthcare systems will leverage digital technology to augment decision-making, free clinicians' time, and personalize care experiences that empower patients.”
The survey further highlights the growing use of self-service digital tools by consumers for health management. Mobile and tablet health apps usage has tripled over the last four years from 16 in 2014 to 48 today. Consumers have significantly increased access to electronic health records EHRs, primarily to check lab-test results 67, review physician notes on medical visits 55, and track prescription histories 41.
Wearable devices use by consumers has also nearly quadrupled over the last four years from 9 in 2014 to 36 today. These devices are being used for a range of health management activities such as monitoring heart rate, tracking physical activity, or managing chronic conditions.
“Digital health tools offer unprecedented opportunities for healthcare syste improve patient care and outcomes by enabling more proactive and personalized treatment approaches,” sd Safavi.
A significant proportion of respondents 73 stated that they would use virtual care services for after-hours appointments. Similarly, 71 indicated interest in taking a class on specific medical conditions virtually, while 65 expressed willingness to participate in family members' medical appointments online.
The study was commissioned by Accenture as part of its annual Consumer Survey on Digital Health report and surveyed over 7,905 consumers aged 18 or older from seven countries. This year's survey specifically med at assessing consumer attitudes toward healthcare technology trs like electronic health records EHRs, digital health management services, virtual health care delivery, and cybersecurity concerns in the healthcare sector.
The Accenture Consumer Survey on Digital Health was conducted between October 2017 and January 2018 by Longitude Research on behalf of Accenture. The survey med to capture consumer perspectives across different industries and business functions through unmatched experience and specialized skills. This year's study sought insights into the digital health landscape, focusing on electronic health records EHRs, management tools, virtual healthcare services, and security concerns in healthcare.
